The dessert our group is going to make is a fusion of the Hong Kong-style ginger cake and Indonesian-style coconut pudding. Using the Southeast Asia Kuih Talam as a base, we create a new form of Kuih Talam by combining ginger cake, a classic dessert in Cantonese teahouse, and coconut layer cake, an Indonesian specialty. Such transfer and combination also symbolize Indonesian workers’ lives in Hong Kong, trying to adapt to the new environment. The Indonesian national flag consists of an upper red band and a lower white band which are exactly the colors of the main ingredients - red edible pigment is added to the ginger cake which then forms the upper part, while the coconut pudding forms the lower.

The name of the dessert is “Yeah! A Cake to Ginger Up”. “Yeah” is the pronunciation of coconut in Cantonese. Meanwhile, it also refers to the word one uses to express excitement in English, thus creating a sense of happiness. “Ginger” represents the ginger cake. “To have ginger” is a Cantonese slang which means being bold and daring. “Cake” in Cantonese has the same pronunciation as “go” in English, thus implies “departure”. Therefore, the name of the dessert symbolizes the integration of Indonesian and Hong Kong culture, while conveying a sense of joy and playfulness. “Departure” can take place at various places - With hope, one departs from home to Hong Kong to earn a living; or with thoughts and anticipation, one departs from Hong Kong for a family reunion at home.
